Assistant Professor in Architectural Design for Public Buildings and Healthy Living Environments

32 hours per week

Are you interested in exploring the next generation of public buildings with the help of data-driven design processes?

Job description
The Group of Public Building (lead by Professor Nathalie de Vries) is inviting applications for an Assistant Professor position in Architectural Design within the Department of Architecture. This position is funded by the Sector Plan Design Engineering Science (OIW) and investigates adaptive strategies that can help rethink the relationship between architecture and the urban environment as well as redefine the concept of livable environments through a data-based approach.

The Group of Public Building explores the role of the public in the built environment, studying past, present and future building types, as well as their relationship with socio-economic developments, sustainable construction principles and climate change. The Group adopts a methodological approach called ‘Multiplicity in Design’ to comprehend the multi layered and faceted design strategies that are needed to conceive future-proof buildings and environments.

As an Assistant Professor in Architectural Design, you will join the activities of the Group and will contribute to its teaching and research agenda. You will develop theoretical foundations and operative strategies with a focus on research by design and the application of data-driven design tools. In this position time will be equally divided between education (the teaching of Design Studios and seminars) and research (within the context of Healthy Living Environments and Smart Urbanization in Europe). You are expected to have knowledge of contemporary building methods and the shift towards a circular society as well as of the world of practice, partially based on experiences previously acquired in professional design settings.

Requirements
To apply for this assistant professor position, you must have:

  • A Ph.D. degree in Architecture.
  • Previous teaching experience in a transdisciplinary setting.
  • A clear research agenda, which can be demonstrated through academic publications or significant professional work.
  • Familiarity with research by design strategies.
  • First hand experience with visualization of data research and spatial data analysis; as well as drawing with software programs like Rhino, Revit, and/or Grasshopper.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with others (students, faculty, and staff) to create a supportive learning environment as well as organizational skills.
  • At least 3 years of working experience in an architecture office.
  • Affinity with the above mentioned themes and research goals.

Conditions of employment
This position is offered as an Academic Career Track position. During the Academic Career Track, we expect you to grow towards an Associate Professor position within a maximum of eight years, for which a position will be available. You will regularly discuss your development and results with senior staff based on a personalized development and performance criteria agreed upon at the start of your Academic Career Track. You will start with a temporary contract that will be converted to a permanent contract no later than 12 -18 months after a positive evaluation, based on continuous confidence in your development potential and fit in the organisation.

This is provided by the TU Delft UTQ programme as part of the Academic Career Track Development programme.
