Interior Architecture at UH
The discourse of Architecture at the scale of the Interior has undergone an unprecedented change. Having emerged as a degree, Interior Architecture engages trans-disciplinary knowledge within a new and blended territory. The Interior Architecture program at the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design investigates the discipline by focusing our program on the reuse, adaptation, and transformation of existing buildings. Poised at the intersection of architecture, conservation, spatial design, ecological performance, and social agency–the trans-disciplinary nature of our curriculum offers students an extraordinary education where innovation, technology, and the art of ‘making’ converge. The program has just completed NASAD accreditation review in Spring, 2023, and is commencing its effort to secure CIDA accreditation. The program founded the International Journal of Interior Architecture and Spatial Design (ii).
Responsibilities/ Duties
We are searching for a leader who values collaboration, scholarship, and making with an ability to direct the multiple initiatives of the Interior Architecture program while pursuing and promoting research and design excellence. Hines College of Architecture and Design, this role offers candidates an opportunity to advance the development and stewardship of creative curricula and methodologies to continue to place our program at the forefront of discourse in Interior Architecture. Recognizing and expanding upon our strengths, candidates will be expected to continue the ongoing development of the identity of the program. Promoting the program, nurturing relationships with design professionals and the community, securing grants and funding sources, and mentoring junior faculty in Interior Architecture, are expected to be among the primary duties of the Director. In addition to leadership and service, successful candidates will teach design studios, conduct seminars and/or lecture courses, and maintain a research agenda. Accreditation for the Interior Architecture program at UH by the Council of Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) is an immediate goal of the College of Architecture and Design, and candidate knowledge and experience in the accreditation process will be valued.
