The Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan invites expressions of interest for a faculty member to chair the Architecture Program for a three-year renewable term beginning July 1, 2024. We seek a dynamic and effective colleague to lead the program; represent it to external constituencies; coordinate instruction; manage the program budget; partner with administrative staff in recruiting faculty and students; and launch new program initiatives in consultation with the faculty and dean.

Candidates must hold or qualify for a tenure or practice track appointment in the Architecture Program at the associate or full professor level. They must possess a record of distinction in teaching and in professional, scholarly, and/or creative achievement, as well as a commitment to strengthening the Architecture Program and its degrees. The ideal candidate will bring ambition and vision to put the Architecture Program at the forefront of our field via the college strategic plan and other initiatives; have strong interpersonal skills and an inclusive leadership style to harness the capacities of faculty, students, and staff; the ability to integrate curriculum and pedagogy with staffing, enrollment, and budget; and an agile and results-oriented approach to operationalize evolving degree, program, and college goals.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Lead faculty and other stakeholders in formulating and pursuing program goals and strategies linked to college and university initiatives and objectives, encompassing academic innovation; diversity, equity, and inclusion; research and creative practice.
  • Lead faculty in formulating and achieving student learning outcomes that reflect the most advanced forms of knowledge and capability consistent with accreditation requirements, via curriculum, pedagogy, teaching assignments, and learning environment.
  • With the dean and senior leadership, recruit, hire, manage, and develop a faculty that combines excellence in teaching with expertise in professional and creative practice and capacity for advanced research.
  • With the dean and senior leadership, recruit, retain, and support a student population that meets program and college goals for enrollment, qualification, and diversity, via strategies for admissions, financial aid, advising, and culture.
  • With the dean and senior leadership, pursue academic innovation that promotes excellence and equity in student learning on a financially sustainable basis.
  • Engage the program with constituencies across and beyond the university, including the Rackham Graduate School and NAAB as well as alumni and external partners such as firms, foundations, and industry.

Support

The Architecture Program chair is supported by faculty degree directors or similar deputies (appointed by the chair in consultation with the dean), the program assistant, an administrative assistant, as well as by program committees. With other senior leadership, the chair sets goals for college staff in areas such as student affairs, enrollment management, and marketing and communications. The chair administers the program budget and can leverage other college funds through partnerships with the dean, the Urban & Regional Planning chair, and the associate and assistant deans.
