The City of San Mateo Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a Project Manager II

The Project Manager II will oversee capital improvement projects in the City’s signature downtown park, including playground renovations, installation of a Fallen Heroes Memorial, and new community amenities  Central Park Playground RenovationCentral Park Master Plan. Another current project is the development of East Hillsdale Park.  We are seeking a motivated candidate to join our diverse and passionate team dedicated to providing exceptional public service.

What You’ll Do

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Develop, plan and coordinate the planning, feasibility, architectural and engineering activities related to capital improvement, renovation projects, and information technology projects.
  • Prepare and administer agreements for professional services related to capital projects, coordinating and directing all activities between the City, and consulting firms.
  • Prepare cost estimates, project schedules and feasibility reports for new or modified structures.
  • Maintain accurate and current project budgets and manage cost and quality controls.
  • Solicit and review bids and recommend contract awards.  Monitor contractor performance, review and process submittals & change orders, retain construction management and inspection assistance, and carry out related activities associated with project construction.
  • Oversee the design, construction, and implementation of projects.
  • Maintain needed records on projects. Prepare and present comprehensive administrative, fiscal, statistical & technical studies, reports, evaluations, & specifications.
  • Coordinate programming, design, review, and construction/implementation activities with City departments & outside agencies.
  • Prepare staff reports and presentations for the City Council, City commissions, boards, and committees, and for neighborhood meetings on capital improvement projects.

What You Bring: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

  Experience

  • Three years of progressively responsible experience related to capital project management, facility management, construction supervision, engineering, architecture, or other building activities.
  • Two or more years of experience in open space, park development planning, playground construction, landscape architecture, or related planning experience.
  • Knowledge of Park irrigation materials, methods, and design concepts.

Training

  • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in planning, public or business administration, real estate development, architecture, engineering, construction management, information technology, or a related field.

License and Certificates:  Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:  Ability to work in standard office, field construction environments (depending on assignment); exposure to outdoors (depending on assignment).
