SSB Junior Designer
Studio Sanford Biggers seeks a Junior Designer to join our team. The Junior Designer will support the Artist and the Production Manager on all aspects of artwork design and execution. The ideal candidate will have a background in architecture and an interest in working with an artist in a dynamic, fast-paced environment to design unique projects – from gallery shows to museum exhibitions to large scale public artworks and architectural interventions both domestic and international. Additionally, the studio has a full shop, and the Junior Designer will support the Shop Manager on in-house design, mockups, etc as needed.
The studio maintains a busy and exciting roster of active and upcoming projects, and the Junior Designer will become an integral part of our team in supporting and advancing the Artist’s practice. This is a unique opportunity to work on culturally significant projects in a wide range of materials and scale, learn about contemporary art production, and be trained in a niche field.
Responsibilities:
- Design assistance for artworks, exhibitions, commissions, and proposals
- 3d modeling and rendering using Rhino
- Drawings/ diagrams to communicate with fabricators
- Material and historical research
- Creation of presentations & installation instructions
- File organization & project tracking
- Note taking during meetings
- Construction of physical models and mockups (in collaboration with the Shop Manager)
- Hands on assistance in the studio as needed
Qualifications:
- Degree in architecture/ related design field or demonstrable comparable experience
- 0 – 3ish years office experience
- Fluency with Rhino & Adobe Suite (please note any additional software skills)
- Comfort reading and drawing architectural plans and details
- Ability to design and prepare files for production
- Ability to communicate visually through drawing, diagramming, renderings, and digital models
- Excellent physical model making skills
- Ability to manage several projects simultaneously
- Interest in material experimentation, craftsmanship, detailing
It is assumed that those coming from an architecture and design background may have little knowledge of artworld-specific skills such as artwork fabrication, exhibition standards, framing standards, and packing/handling best practices. Candidates should be open and interested in being trained in these areas.
This is a full time, in person position at our studio in Mott Haven (easily accessible via subway). Studio hours are 10-6pm M-F, with occasional evenings as needed. Work/life balance taken seriously. Potential travel for shop visits, installations, and events. The studio strives to provide a healthy and supportive work environment.
