SSB Junior Designer

Studio Sanford Biggers seeks a Junior Designer to join our team. The Junior Designer will support the Artist and the Production Manager on all aspects of artwork design and execution. The ideal candidate will have a background in architecture and an interest in working with an artist in a dynamic, fast-paced environment to design unique projects – from gallery shows to museum exhibitions to large scale public artworks and architectural interventions both domestic and international. Additionally, the studio has a full shop, and the Junior Designer will support the Shop Manager on in-house design, mockups, etc as needed.

The studio maintains a busy and exciting roster of active and upcoming projects, and the Junior Designer will become an integral part of our team in supporting and advancing the Artist’s practice. This is a unique opportunity to work on culturally significant projects in a wide range of materials and scale, learn about contemporary art production, and be trained in a niche field.

Responsibilities:

  • Design assistance for artworks, exhibitions, commissions, and proposals
  • 3d modeling and rendering using Rhino
  • Drawings/ diagrams to communicate with fabricators
  • Material and historical research
  • Creation of presentations & installation instructions
  • File organization & project tracking
  • Note taking during meetings
  • Construction of physical models and mockups (in collaboration with the Shop Manager)
  • Hands on assistance in the studio as needed

Qualifications:

  • Degree in architecture/ related design field or demonstrable comparable experience
  • 0 – 3ish years office experience
  • Fluency with Rhino & Adobe Suite (please note any additional software skills)
  • Comfort reading and drawing architectural plans and details
  • Ability to design and prepare files for production
  • Ability to communicate visually through drawing, diagramming, renderings, and digital models
  • Excellent physical model making skills
  • Ability to manage several projects simultaneously
  • Interest in material experimentation, craftsmanship, detailing

It is assumed that those coming from an architecture and design background may have little knowledge of artworld-specific skills such as artwork fabrication, exhibition standards, framing standards, and packing/handling best practices. Candidates should be open and interested in being trained in these areas.

This is a full time, in person position at our studio in Mott Haven (easily accessible via subway). Studio hours are 10-6pm M-F, with occasional evenings as needed. Work/life balance taken seriously. Potential travel for shop visits, installations, and events. The studio strives to provide a healthy and supportive work environment.
