KieranTimberlake is currently seeking an Entry Level Design Researcher to join our office. Comprised of over 100 professionals of diverse backgrounds and abilities, our practice is recognized worldwide. With equal emphasis on research, communications, and the built environment, our projects include the programming, planning, and design of new structures as well as the transformation of existing buildings. We have special expertise in education, government, arts and culture, civic, and residential projects, but common to all our work is the principle that each project begins with a question and continues its development within a culture of inquiry. By ensuring that design results from deep investigation into site, program, climate, ecology, resources, and environment, our interdisciplinary process inspires creativity and fosters a culture of sharing ideas, knowledge, and technique. The end result is artfully integrated, high quality structures that serve our clients’ needs and push the practice of architecture forward.
The Design Researcher will collect, organize, and synthesize information and processes across a range of spatial and temporal scales. Working as an integrated member of a building, landscape, tool, or technology team, the DR will assist other Research Group members in constructing physical prototypes, custom digital workflows, and entirely new software and hardware. They will also help generate data-driven graphical and statistical analyses that may inform future design solutions for both firm projects and the architecture industry as a whole.
In addition, the DR will participate in experiments and information-creation proposals that encompass a wide variety of subjects including ecology, hydrology and geology, microclimate characterization, field data collection, sensor networks, occupant health, immersive environments, and fabrication processes. During this research, the DR may be tasked with engaging academic and industry professionals and may also assist in preparing findings for publication and communication to architectural designers, academic audiences, peers, and client groups.
The DR will reside within the KieranTimberlake Research Group, a highly collaborative and transdisciplinary entity that requires its members to work well within a social environment. In addition to having excellent oral, written, and visual communication skills, Research Group members must effectively articulate questions, discuss their ideas publicly, and be active participants in brainstorming sessions. The successful candidate will have superb organizational skills as well as the demonstrated capacity to be a collaborative, detail-oriented problem solver with the intellectual nimbleness to work with information on which they are not an expert.
All applicants with a demonstrated ability to learn across a variety of disciplines will be considered for this position. However, knowledge of the following fields and tools will prove useful to the position, and any applicable experience should be noted by the candidate: ecology, experimental design, data analytics and visualization, 3D and parametric modeling, geospatial modeling, scripting, web development, database management, and graphic design. Candidates should also note any working knowledge of the tools necessary for creating prototypes, including CNC machining and manual fabrication for a range of media.
Current students and recent undergraduates of relevant programs may apply. Prior work experience in a design environment is desired but not required.
The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability, confidence, and desire to inquire about the limits of what’s possible while seeking novel solutions to architectural problems that offer value across social, environmental, and aesthetic agendas. The successful candidate’s current, past, and anticipated body of work, including projects, experiments, reports, and publications, will evidence the purposeful interrogation of the broader implications of their research.
Interested applicants should send the following via email attachment:
- A cover letter indicating your interest in the position
- A current resume including references
